FIFCO strengthens its commitment to biodiversity through high-impact initiatives

21 March, 2025

  • The company is the first private company to join the Cubujuquí Interurban Biological Corridor.
  • The Urban Eco-Connection program restores green areas and strengthens ecological connectivity.
  • More than 68 bird species have been recorded in its green areas through biannual counts.
  • 40 hectares of forest are being conserved within the Conchal National Mixed Wildlife Refuge.

In the framework of March 21, International Day of Forests, FIFCO reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation through initiatives that strengthen biodiversity and restore key ecosystems in its areas of influence. The company has implemented strategies of reforestation, environmental education and ecological connectivity that not only protect urban forests, but also contribute to resilience in the face of climate change.

Biodiversity plays an essential role in ecosystem stability, ensuring carbon capture, habitat regeneration and mitigation of the effects of climate change. Aware of its impact, FIFCO has become the first private company to join as a collaborating partner of the Cubujuquí Interurban Biological Corridor, consolidating its leadership by integrating conservation in its business model.

The Cubujuquí Interurban Biological Corridor covers an area of 235 km² and impacts more than 386,000 inhabitants, promoting ecological connectivity and biodiversity conservation. FIFCO has actively participated in this project through its Urban Eco-Connection initiative, which aims to create climate refuges through the ecological restoration of green areas within its production and administrative plants, as well as in areas close to its area of influence.

Ecological restoration and biodiversity monitoring

In line with its conservation strategy, FIFCO promotes ecological restoration and wildlife monitoring activities. Since 2023, the company has been part of the biannual bird counts organized by the Cubujuquí IBC, SINAC, the National University (UNA) and Cornell University. During these days, in which around 30 collaborators participate, more than 68 species of birds have been recorded on FIFCO’s properties. Likewise, in January 2025, ornithologists from the United States and Canada visited FIFCO’s facilities as part of the International Ornithology Meeting, where they spotted 16 different bird species.

“Being part of the Cubujuquí Interurban Biological Corridor and leading ecological restoration initiatives reflects our commitment to expansive sustainability and biodiversity protection. At FIFCO we believe that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility, and we work to integrate responsible practices in all our operations, achieving a balance between urban development and the protection of the natural environment,’ expressed Maria Pía Robles, FIFCO’s Director of Corporate Relations.

This year, the company will continue to expand its impact within the Cubujuquí IBC by acquiring new wildlife monitoring tools, which will enable it to expand the areas for species sighting and monitoring in the area. In addition, two bird-counting volunteer programs will be carried out, as well as reforestation efforts in the Río Segundo protection zone. Further, there are plans to establish a strategic alliance with the NGO Costa Rica por Siempre, with a community outreach project within the corridor, seeking to empower communities and encourage their participation in its protection. Similarly, work will be carried out together with the National Power and Light Company (CNFL) for the ecological restoration of FIFCO’s internal green areas.

A conservation business model

At Reserva Conchal, FIFCO’s hospitality division, the company maintains 40 hectares of forest in a conservation state within the Conchal National Mixed Wildlife Refuge, contributing to preserve local ecosystems. In addition, it promotes innovative beekeeping programs through the Reserva Conchal Apiary, where nearly five million bees distributed in 60 hives fertilize approximately 3,000 hectares of forest in Guanacaste.

FIFCO’s commitment to sustainability transcends biodiversity protection and extends to environmental education, volunteer programs and reforestation. The company has set up a tree nursery where it grows more than 2,000 trees of 35 native species, which are donated to institutions and NGOs for reforestation projects.

With these initiatives, FIFCO reaffirms its leadership in the conservation of urban ecosystems, contributing to ecological connectivity and biodiversity protection in Costa Rica.
