Business Alliance for Sustainability launches Recycling Stations Project

10 October, 2024

  • The objective is to promote more sustainable consumption habits.

Starting today, consumers will be able to actively participate in the recycling culture by separating and correctly disposing of post-consumer product packaging, thanks to the installation of modern RECYCLING STATIONS, located in Walmart stores in Alajuela, Cartago and Guadalupe.

The objective of this BUSINESS ALLIANCE FOR SUSTAINABILITY project is to promote concrete actions that seek to educate people towards more sustainable and friendly habits, for the conservation, sustainability and restoration of planet Earth.

These Recycling Stations will receive post-consumer PET plastic, aluminum, paper, cardboard, tetrapack, electronics and polylaminate packaging. The waste will be collected periodically, to be recycled by a certified and authorized company, which will give them responsible traceability, will be able to quantify the impact and guarantee that they will be part of other processes, including circular economy.

Thirteen of the 28 companies that make up the Business Alliance for Sustainability are participating in RECYCLING STATIONS, the first stage of which will be implemented over a 6-month period  (see table below). These companies are committed to promoting greater environmental responsibility by generating synergies that will benefit both the environment and the country’s economy. The companies TERNOVA and MADISA are also participating in the project. Grupo Ternova provided the recycling stations through the support of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). Madisa, a leader in integrated waste management, is the company that will manage all the materials used in the project.

The Recycling Stations will be available during the same hours as the Walmart stores in Alajuela, Cartago and Guadalupe (San José): Monday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is important to deliver clean, dry and separated packages in the container identified for each material.

The goal is to collect approximately 1.2 tons of recyclable material per month, aimed at creating awareness in the population about the importance of sorting solid waste and making responsible use of it. This figure may vary depending on the season, but we are optimistic that this initiative will have a positive impact on the 3 Walmart stores and the communities.

Companies participating in Recycling Stations

Alimentos Pro Salud, DEMASA, Cooperativa de Productores de Leche Dos Pinos, FIFCO, Florex, Grupo Numar, LAICA, Nestlé, Pipasa, Pozuelo, Pastas Roma, Tío Pelón, Walmart de México y Centroamérica.
